While some folks in the academic community have it good regarding their professional station and financial compensation, many of us at Goucher College are struggling. Some are low paid, go without or with minimal benefits, do not have a voice in faculty governance, are not advanced in our positions, and frequently live with chronic money-related insecurity. As "at will" employees we are working effecively without rights and can be dismissed at any time, without cause. Academics coming together to form a union allows us to help schools like Goucher actually become stronger organizations - for the teachers, administrators, trustees, and for the students.
