In forming a union, we will be joining our colleagues throughout higher education, including non-tenure track faculty at Baltimore-Washington, D.C.-area schools like the Maryland Institute College of the Art (MICA), American University, and Georgetown who all have successfully organized unions with SEIU. We share a deep commitment to Goucher's Community Principles of respect, inclusion, communication, service/social justice, and responsibility. With these principles in mind, we have chosen to publicly endorse the unionization effort here at Goucher.
WHO ARE CONTINGENT FACULTY?
- Rollie Hudson
Communication & Media Studies
Goucher's contingent faculty union is part of our commitment to treating each other with respect and diginity. I think I would feel like Goucher failed me in some way if we weren't able to make this change together.
-Maureen Winter, French
Once we are organized and seated at the bargaining table, we will be able to have a direct and representative discussion with the administration.
-Robert Baron, Cultural Sustainability
Teaching at Goucher College is a fun and rewarding job, but unfortunately it does not pay very well. Not only would it be good for me personally to make at least a livable wage, but for all of my faculty colleagues there to do so also.
